Feldwood Farms

Feldwood Farms is the closest blueberry picking to downtown Atlanta, on Oglesby Road at College Park, about twenty minutes out and a few from the airport. It describes itself simply as "Your Atlanta U-Pick Blueberry Farm", and reviewers come back for the welcome as much as the fruit.

What You Can Pick

Blueberries, at $7 a pound, off rows of bushes that do not all taste the same. The farm does not plant every block in the same soil, and a picker who worked his way across noticed it: some of the berries are sweet, some sour, some tart, and each side is different. Worth tasting as you go rather than filling from the first bush you reach.

The late-season fruit is the sweetest. The farm said so itself in its final week: "These late season berries are sweeter than normal right now and they taste amazing."

Good to Know

The hours are built around the weather rather than the working day, and they are unusual enough to catch people out:

• Tuesday to Friday - 8am to noon, then closed over the middle of the day, open again 1pm to 4pm
• Saturday and Sunday - long days, 8am to 8pm
• Monday - closed

Ring before you come. The farm closes for rain and for maintenance without notice, and it is straightforward about why: "We do not sell wet fruit."

Bring a sun hat. There is no shade in the rows and this is a south Atlanta summer.

Pro tip: Google lists the Tuesday to Friday afternoons as 4:30pm to 8pm. The farm's own page says 1pm to 4pm, and the farm is right. Turning up at five means finding it shut.
