This season
Apple picking opens on August 20 with Zestar and Sweet MAIA, which is among the earliest openings in the region.
Checked August 21, 2026
Summersweet Orchard on 92nd Street at Caledonia opens on August 20, which makes it one of the first apple orchards picking anywhere in the region, a full three weeks before most of the Ridge.
Apples, starting with Zestar and Sweet MAIA. Both are early varieties bred for flavour rather than storage, and both are effectively unbuyable in a shop because they do not keep.
The orchard publishes very little beyond its opening date. Its 2023 prices were $1 a pound, or $1.45 for Honeycrisp, which would make it among the cheapest apple picking in the region, but no 2026 figures were found.
Ring 616-698-7134 before setting out.
Pro tip: an August apple is a different thing from an October one. Zestar is crisp and sharp and lasts about a week off the tree, which is exactly why nobody sells it.
